I purchased the original _Eat-Clean Diet_ book when it came out a few years ago, and used the principles in it to lose sixteen pounds (two dress sizes). Recently, I've been a little more lax in my eating, so I purchased this book last week to help motivate me to get back on track with my eating for the new year.
Before purchasing this newer edition, I was worried that it would be very similar to the first version of the book, but, as Reno explains, it contains over 100 pages of new text. While there are some chapters that are similar in both books (like chapters on the importance of drinking water and eating breakfast), there are a lot of new ideas. If you are trying to decide whether to purchase the older, original edition of this book or this one, I would recommend buying this one since it contains more recent information about nutritional studies. If, like me, you already own the original book, I think you'll still find the ideas in here useful and inspirational.
I find Reno to be very motivating, and, if you're struggling to lose weight, you will probably find her books really helpful. The idea behind clean eating is that you eat foods that are as close to their natural state as possible, without adding in extra sugar, chemicals, etc. Eating six meals a day ensures that you never go hungry, and you don't have to worry about calorie counting.
Another great feature of this book is that she includes a vegan meal plan in it. The first edition was very centered around meat, which made it difficult for me (as a lacto-ovo vegetarian) to see how I could incorporate all of her suggestions since I wasn't about to gnaw on a chicken breast as my morning snack.
Reno also focuses much more in this edition on the environmental effects that our food choices have, citing Michael Pollan's work and the principles of films like _Food, Inc._. Since I am concerned with environmental issues, I really liked this new focus on eating locally and sustainably.
This book also contains 50 new recipes. I have not tried any of them yet, but will be sure to update my review after I have tried a few. The inclusion of quite a few vegetarian recipes is another nice feature.
I first discovered Reno in _Oxygen_ fitness magazine, where she is a monthly columnist, and last year was happy to see that Robert Kennedy Publishing (the group that publishes Reno's book and _Oxygen_) began a new magazine called _Clean Eating_. If you want even more seasonal, healthy recipes and nutrition tips, I definitely recommend subscribing to it. Just be warned, however, that it contains a lot of ads promoting Reno's books -- to an annoying degree. If you can look past those ads, it makes a nice addition to a clean-eating lifestyle.
UPDATE ON 3/1/10: I've made a few of the recipes, and all of them have turned out to be really good! In my original review, I accidentally said that the book has over 15 new recipes, but it actually has 50 new ones. If you have the original version of this, you definitely don't *need* this newer version, but the updates and success stories make it a nice addition to my collection of health books. |
LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

| I LOVE THIS BOOK. It is beautiful and informative, plus inspirational. This has to be the most gorgeous "diet" book there is. It looks like a magazine (no surprise there though!) and has luscious food pictures, beautiful beach, ocean, and lifestyle photos. It is easy to read, with short chunks of concise information. This is not a book about diet only, it is more like a guide to a happy, healthy life. It is the first one of Tosca Reno's books that I have bought and I am so very happy with it. Thanks Tosca!!! |
thanks tosca!!!

| As an owner of all Tosca's "Eat Clean" books, this is one of the best! Even if you have the other books buy this one...Tosca has definitely added more information to it which makes the purchase worthwhile. I am not a big meat eater so I was happy to see that she added meal plans for vegans/vegetarians. This book has plenty of glossy photos that make it a treat to read...its easy to understand and her plan really does work for ANYONE. I dont know why it is titled a 'diet' becuz you dont feel deprived in the least~Eating clean is a lifestyle. |
Great book for inspiration, education and reference. Not to mention the recipes!

This is one of Tosca's better books because it has tons of info, tips and inspiration on the Eat-Clean Diet philosophy. It is full of "eye candy" with striking photos on nearly every page of the thick glossy paper. Sprinkled throughout are "Dear Tosca" letters from readers with inspiring testimonials, as well as small boxes of tip items. There are also numerous info-boxes with a wide variety of topics such as "Common Foods and Fiber Counts," "My Clean Oats and What I Put on Them," "Making Water Better," and "Solutions for a Busy Day."
We also get to read Tosca's story, sprinkled throughout the book. She knows what it is like to be fat (weighed 204 pounds at one time!). "I am a normal woman with everyday issues, just like everyone else, and for a long time, I carried excess weight, too." She encourages us, "There is infinite joy to be had in living life with a healthful, lean physique" and tells us we are in good company because stars like Angelina Jolie use the clean diet approach (according to tabloids).
There are 17 chapters, and each one is color coded at the bottom right hand corner for ease of flipping through the chapters. At the beginning of the book we learn the Eat-Clean principles, which are also summarized neatly on one page, and include for example eating six meals a day and combining lean protein with complex carbs at each mini-meal. We also learn what to expect, the basics of metabolism, and the power of water (I just wish she had told us what kind is best--distilled? Filtered? Spring?).
The middle chapters deal with getting inspired, shopping clean, eating clean while traveling and in social situations (even includes a chart for fast food dining), and how to exercise. The latter chapters involve cellulite, loose skin and sags (one entire chapter on that!), longevity, superfoods, meal plans and grocery lists. Gluten-free and vegan meal plans are included. Some of the superfoods include game meat, coconut, seafood, chia seeds, and kefir. She explains how you can benefit from 5 cents a day worth of flaxseeds.
Finally, there are 50 new recipes with mouth-watering photos for nearly all of them. These are divided into breakfast, starters, salads, soups/stews, proteins, complete meals and desserts. The desserts include a couple of biscotti recipes that look like something from Starbuck's, as well as chocolate covered bananas. And though I am a raw fooder, I have to admit that "picante frittata" looks mighty tempting! Each recipe has nutritional info per serving, number of servings, prep time and cooking time. After that is a chapter on frequently asked question and answers, and one with the eat-clean diet at a glance.
This is a great book for inspiration, education and reference. Not to mention the recipes!

This is the book I use with my Personal Training clients. I just started a new team for a Biggest Loser style competition. My team is using this book and one of my team members lost 10.5 pounds in week #1 using the Cooler plan #1. We will switch him to Cooler Plan 2 for his long term program but week one.. WOW. Eating clean is the way to go and this book makes it simple.
It has all the menu's, exchanges, shopping lists and everything you need to be successful. I love the philosophy of Tosca and read Oxygen magazine as well. Basically, if you want to look good, you have to put good things in your body. She makes it easy.
Anyone can work with this. Plus its' got great pics, it's to the point! Easy read. |
This book finally makes sense and changed my life!

I read the original Eat Clean Diet and this new "recharged" version. I have to say that after reading, watching, and listening to all the different versions of dieting and exercise, this is the book that teaches you HOW to eat correctly. Eating Clean has now become my way of life.
Eating clean is about avoiding processed foods and learning how important proteins, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates are to your body. The book equips you with the knowledge of how to shop by providing a clean grocery list, recipes, exercise, eating-out menu advice, and so much more.
Tosca is a true inspiration because she is a living example of how an overweight forty-something woman can go from frumpy to fabulous by eating clean and working out. This book makes sense! Forget the strange diet books. This is the one that will teach you how to live and eat healthy. |
So glad I purchased this book.

| I purchased the original Eat Clean Diet book a while back and liked it. My doctor told me a few months ago that eating six small meals a day with lean protein and complex carbohydrates is absolutely the best way to eat. I subscribe to Oxygen and Clean Eating magazines, so I know all about how to accomplish this way of life. My problem has always been putting the knowledge into action. That's where this book comes in for me. I hesitated to buy it, but decided that my life could use some "recharging". I am so glad that I bought this book! It is truly inspiring and has gotten me off the couch and really eating clean. This book put into perspective not only what I was doing to my own body, but also the example I've been setting for my children. I always figured that eating clean was complicated, time consuming, and expensive. This book is extremely motivating and gives tons of tips on how eating clean can be so simple and affordable even for a busy mom with three picky children. Thanks to Tosca for updating and expanding the original book. |

First, this book is beautiful. The whole book is full-color glossy pages of beautiful images. I don't know how they were able to produce it for such a low purchase price... And it was very easy reading- not scientific (like the Dr. OZ book).
I have been following the basics of this book- no sugar, lean proteins with complex carbs at each of 6 small meals a day (I haven't tried any of the recipes- except the oatmeal breakfast, which I LOVE) and lots of water. I have more energy now than I can use in a day! There are actually TOO many hours in the day now- for real. I find myself saying "Gee, what can I do now"... instead of "I'm ready for a nap".
I have so much energy, that I am able to workout with much more intensity than ever before and am seeing results in much shorter time.
I haven't wanted to go without sweeteners though, so I've started using organic apple butter (recommended in the book) instead of sugar (in my oatmeal) and it's fantastic. Good for you and very sweet and low in calories.
I'm thrilled with this book and the results. SO worth it. |

| This is my First Tosca Reno book and I have been following her for a short time through Robert Kennedy's Oxygen magazine. As I read this book, I feel it is so well written, that even a person without any fitness, or nutritional background can feel motivated and reach their weight loss goals as well as gain priceless knowledge on what you can eat and how your body responds to it, no matter where you are or how busy you are. It really is as if she is reading my mind as I read a new chapter. Sometimes I even find myself saying, wow, I just said that (before reading it! LOL I have been clean eating for 9 weeks now, and have already lost 7.4lbs 4.5inches at the 6week mark (I wont weigh in again until I hit the 12 week mark, plus I lift weights). My whole family is eating clean and we are all seeing results as my husband has also lost 7lbs on the same 6wk mark and my children are doing MUCH better at school since they are nutritionally content therefore focusing better! All the testimonials are HIGHLY motivating and I love it when I reach another one in each chapter as this book is loaded with them as well as delicious recipes and tips!! I recommended this to a friend of mine who doesnt have time to workout and she has only been doing it for 1 week and has lost 3lbs! You won't be disappointed! :) |
Best Diet Book Ever!

| I have purchased tons of diet books, if you come to my house you'll see that at least 50% of my library are cooking/diet books. Before I purchased the Eat-Clean Diet book, I read over reviews, visited Tosca Reno's website, and tried several of the recipes posted on the Eat Clean website. This was enough for me to make my decision. This book is not so much about "dieting", but eating clean, eating healthy, and eating more so that you don't have ups and downs on your sugar levels that become in cravings for fatty and sugary foods. Like Tosca says, by keeping your body satisfied with the correct combination of foods, your metabolism will accept those and start moving faster to make room for your next meal. I thought I was going to end up gaining more weight, since you eat a lot more, but she's definitely done her homework. Once your body adjusts to the new and healthy eating, it will start thanking you by shedding those unwanted pounds, oh, and giving you lots and lots of energy! |

| I am a full time college student and a mother with a 2 year old and a 6 month old at home. At first I thought following the cooler plans and eating clean would be difficult but I was wrong! I was able to find all of the "weird" (really, not that weird) foods - like flaxseed - at my local grocery store and following Tosca's principle of clean left overs has saved me time and money! I don't spend money getting fast food on campus, I don't spend money getting junk when I have to be out running errands with the kids all day. I have lost 3 pounds in the first week and busted through the plateau I had been lingering at for months. And the best part - my 2 year old loves the oatmeal! I make it in the slow cooker over night and he will cheerfully eat a bowl or two every morning. He will even eat it cold! This book is a time saver, a money saver, and I believe a life saver! |
Great Book!

| Tosca Reno's books recommend a healthy diet that is the way I've always believed we should eat. You feel better and more satisfied. We have also found that just about every recipe we've tried of hers is great. They have a lot of flavor while being nutritionally rich and easy to prepare. You don't, however, have to use her recipes. This book is also about more than just food. It also covers the fact that fitness plays a part in being healthy and feeling well. I haven't hesitated to recommend this to anyone I know. |

| I purchased this book a week and a half ago and immediately implemented the Eat Clean principles into my diet. I have already lost four pounds! I only have 16 to go before I reach my goal. The recipes are awesome (love the sweet potato oat bars! I substitute pumpkin puree and they turn out similar) and the plan is so easy to follow. Shopping lists and practical advice for the person who wants to clean up their act and get healthy. |

| This book is great just like her first book and I was impressed that it wasn't repeat information. The principles Tosca teaches will help you lose weight, reverse disease, and increase your energy levels. The book is well written and not boring like most dieting books. Also, this book is great because it's realistic and she doesn't ask you to each sticks and grass... instead the food is delicious! I disagree on a few of the health points in the book like her recommendation of lots of grain products. As a physician myself I recommend focusing on more raw vegetables and fruits because they decrease inflammation, but still this book is one of the best. |
